Wang Zhelin Praised for Low-Post Power

Last night, in the final game of the CBA preseason tournament’s Liaoning Fengcheng leg, Fujian defeated Qingdao 108-86, wrapping up their preseason with a 1-2 record. After the game, Fujian forward Chen Linjian spoke with LeSports, praising teammate Wang Zhelin for his powerful low-post scoring.

Chen noted that the arrival of new import JJ Hickson has boosted the shooters’ confidence thanks to his rebounding presence. In the win over Qingdao, Chen scored 14 points and reflected on his own performance: “It’s been a while—my shooting touch hasn’t been great over the last seven or eight games, so I’ve been trying to adjust. Tonight, I finally found my rhythm.” Playing through a lingering back injury, Chen summed up the feeling in one word: “Sore!” He explained, “I’ve had this problem since before last season started. This year I’ve been training with a focus on strengthening my back, and it’s better than before. It’s nothing major—just sore after games.”

With Wang Zhelin and Hickson anchoring the paint, Fujian’s tactics are built from the inside out. “Coach Zhang emphasizes team basketball. Since we have Wang and Hickson, our main approach is to go inside first, then outside,” Chen said. Against Qingdao, Wang scored 9 points, but his real value was creating open looks for teammates. “Wang’s low-post game is so strong it draws double teams, which gives us shooters more opportunities when the ball swings outside,” Chen added.

Speaking about summer signing JJ Hickson, Chen highlighted his rebounding ability: “He fights hard for boards, and as shooters, we feel more confident knowing we’ll get extra possessions.” Fujian also retained last season’s import point guard, Dwight Buycks, and Chen said their chemistry is already strong: “We get along well off the court, and on the court, we have good understanding. That makes teamwork easy.”

Looking ahead, Chen stated that Fujian’s first goal is to reach the playoffs and then push for a deeper run. Born in 1993 and standing 1.98 meters tall, Chen plays as a small forward. He earned a spot on China’s Olympic squad last summer and scored 16 points in a friendly against Jordan. Last season, he played 36 games, averaging 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 25.9 minutes per game.
